About the Buster Family Reading Program

The BUSTER Family Reading Program is the brainchild of elementary school teacher Kristen Sisk. Kristen developed the program out of frustration - frustration that the kids in her class needed more than what she could give them at school to develop the single skill that would have the greatest impact on their success throughout their school careers and their lives - reading comprehension.

When parents came to Kristen asking what they could do to help, she had very little to give them. Now she has the answer!

And the answer involved tying together what the kids were learning at school with what they were doing at home.

When Kristen showed the program to reading professor Joe Vaughan he saw a way to help parents and teachers help kids far beyond the confines of Kristen's classroom. And together they are realizing a dream of bringing BUSTER to classrooms and homes across the country.

Understanding that the foundation for reading skills are developed long before children ever reach school, Joe and Kristen expanded the program to include a preschool component.

BUSTER provides a systematic and strategic family reading program, based on research, to improve literacy for preschoolers and elementary aged kids - thus positioning them to achieve their full potential and more.

  About the Founders

Kristen Sisk, M. Ed.
Kristen Sisk is an experienced elementary classroom teacher in both public and private schools in Florida and Texas.  She enjoys teaching reading skills and strategies through quality literature and the content areas.  The lessons learned during these years are the foundation on which BUSTER has been built.

Kristen Sisk co-founded Learning and Literacy Systems in 2007 and serves as its President.  In that capacity, she continues to consult and write. She received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Valparaiso University in Indiana and her M.S. in Reading from Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas.

Kristen and her husband, Shane, live in Mesquite, Texas.  They have been blessed with two amazing children, Carson and Cutter.   There is so much to learn from children - what an answer to prayers they both are!

Joe Vaughan, Ed.D.
Dr. Joe Vaughan, CEO, has been helping kids become great readers for over 40 years.  His teaching career has included helping teachers from preschool to elementary levels and helping kids with learning and thinking skills in secondary and college.  His support for BUSTER is unqualified and he has helped Kristen expand her school-based ideas to preschool kids and their parents.

Dr. Vaughan has published numerous books and professional teaching articles on how to teach and improve literacy and learning skills.  He lives with his darling wife at Rosevale Cottage near a suburb of Dallas.  Linda and Joe have 4 children and their black-footed Manx cat who prowls the house in search of loving children who have escaped to distant places around the country.  Linda is currently writing a series of children’s books about Scooty and his friends following the pattern developed by Beatrix Potter.
